Welcome to the Wesley Foundation at Arkansas State University! We are located at 110 Dean St. in Jonesboro, AR. For those of you familiar with campus, that means we are just outside the lower exit of the parking garage near the Student Union, across from Kays and University Halls.
Wesley Foundations are university and/or college campus initiatives of the United Methodist Church. Wesley Foundations claim ancestry in the founding "Holy Club" of the early days of Methodist movement, a group of students at Oxford University guided by John and Charles Wesley in "methodical" (hence "Methodist") study, prayer, and self-discipline of faith in Jesus Christ and the Bible.
The first Wesley Foundation was established October 13, 1913 at the University of Illinois. Bishop James C. Baker's influence in organizing this first Wesley Foundation chose the name to emphasize two spheres of outreach. Wesley refers to John Wesley the founder of the Methodist Church and first campus minister at Oxford University, while Foundation was selected to mean an "open movement," an ecumenical movement available to all college students.
The Wesley Foundation at Arkansas State University began as an initiative off campus in a building on Caraway Rd., but was established on campus at it's current location in December of 1958.
While the A-State Wesley Foundation has its roots in the United Methodist Church and is particularly connected to, and mostly supported by the Arkansas Conference, we still invite students of other faith backgrounds (or none at all). Though we are actively pursuing and practicing a Christian (Jesus-centered) way of life, we value the dialogue and journey of each person, and hope to provide a safe space for anyone to explore the Christian faith without expecting you to embrace it (admittedly though, we will be hoping you do).
Whatever your reasons are for coming to Arkansas State or wherever you plan to go when you leave, we hope you’ll find a college community at A-State Wesley!
